Food Security From Another Perspective
09:44One of my favourite places to go to on the
weekend is the Cere’s Community Environment Park. For those that haven’t been there this is a
fantastic place to take the kids or just go and visit for the day…..as sort of
day out of the city without the long drive.
The park is a hub of activity that includes many social impact businesses,
including a café, organic grocer, nursery.
There is even a pen for the chooks which is a favourite of many of the
kids. The park is designed around
sustainability and sustainable living.
The park has a variety of projects that include farming, sustainable energy park, community gardens and learning centre and much more.
When I was a child one of the proverbs I remember
is that “if you give a man a fish you teach him to eat for a day, but teach him
to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
For me Ceres is an amazing community that encapsulates this
philosophy. The park encourages a building
of community of people that you can network and learn from. There are a number of short paid courses that
one can take. These include short 1-day
courses and there is also Certificate II courses as well.
There are also volunteer programs where one
could learn how to build a sustainable garden at home, providing the ultimate
in food security, this is something my partner have wanted to do for a long
time. Not only is this a great activity,
but it also provides healthy food for you to eat. These types of gardens are widely growing in popularity.
And best of all any excess you can sell, or
better yet even share it with those that may be less fortunate to have a space
to provide their own security. You can also join our Facebook page and join our community.
Good luck and hope this inspires some green
fingers out there.

Lionel, I also love Ceres and am fortunate enough to live close by. Their weekend markets are a great way to stock up on locally grown, organic fresh fruit and veg at reasonable prices. You can also volunteer to work in their on-site gardens and be paid in fresh produce. It's a great way to garden if you have a green thumb but little or no space, or a great way to learn if you are new to fruit and veg growing (like me!) I've also known people with good gardening skills but very low on cash who have volunteered as a way to effectively pay for fresh, nutritious food that they otherwise could not afford. A win all round I think.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment Melissa. I wasn't aware of the payment in kind for gardening services, thats a fantastic initiative!
DeleteI plan to attend one of the gardening courses, because my gardening skills have much to be desired.
lovely place Lionel.
ReplyDeleteYou enthuse me to visit that place.
I think it is great solution to teach people how to farm fruit and vegetable.
Therefore, they can provide their own security rather than depend on governments or donations.
You should definitely go a take a look Khadijah, it is really a great place even to take a walk around the gardens on the weekend. Get rid of some of that study stress from the week!
DeleteWow!!!, it is very good place to visit. Indeed, the park that you mention is quite similar to my king's palace in Thailand where he built to teach people how to do occupations that are sustainable for environments.
